I just saw Evil Dead 2 pretty recently, must say I was impressed!
Ash is the coolest, man. Who else could wield a demonic hand with such authoritay???
Now the question is: Do I now backtrack and watch Evil Dead 1 or go forward with the Army of Darkness?

Re: Ash is pretty damn groovy
Thu, May 6, 2004 - 10:33 AMEvil Dead 1 and 2 cover a lot of the same ground, but Army of Darkness is the conclusion to the story begun in 2. I would suggest watching Army of Darkness next, and then going back.
Ash is the grooviest zombie-defiler of them all. The kung fu priest in Dead Alive is up there too.

Thu, May 6, 2004 - 5:03 PMWhat Barnaby said. I did it in that order. 2 then AOD then 1. One is the lamest of the 3 anyways. -

Re: Ash is pretty damn groovy
Thu, May 6, 2004 - 5:58 PMEvil Dead 1 is not lame! At least not when you picture the crew staggering around with their homemade steady cam equipment and all that. 2 is my favorite, by far, but I think 1 rocks too.

Thu, May 6, 2004 - 10:46 PMI didn't say the film was necessarilly lame...it's just the lamest among the 3...it's not lame overall, just lame in comparison. -

Re: Ash is pretty damn groovy
Fri, May 7, 2004 - 7:27 AMHey Jon,
Great Tribe, great to be here.
I think the first Evil Dead, for it's incredibly low budget, was an outstanding movie (aside from the whole tree violation thing...that wasn't really necessary). But the DVD makes the whole ED1 experience fantastic. Bruce Campbell's commentary is incredibly funny. If y'all haven't watched the film with the commentary, it's a must.
ED2 is my favorite of the three. ED3 (Army of Darkness) is probably my most viewed of the three, though. As it's sillyness is just the thing after a long stressful day.

Re: Ash is pretty damn groovy
Fri, May 7, 2004 - 9:37 AMi watched them in order actually...
2 is my fave, then 1, then 3, not to say i don't like 3, it's just that I like lots of blood and gratuitous violence... I'm a zombie/horror man and 3 just derailed a bit too much for me to put it above 1.
I'm also glad somebody knows about the Kung Fu Priest, fuckin' great movie.
Has anybody ever noticed how as the ED movies progress Ash turns from a pansy into an ass kicker, his shotgun grows barrells, his shirt pocket reproduces shotgun shells, and his chin gets larger in proportion to how much ass he can kick?

Re: (aside from the whole tree violation thing...that wasn't really necessary)
Sun, May 9, 2004 - 4:43 AMThe tree violation has freaked more people out than some of the other scenes. Yeah, it's rape. Yeah, it's horriffic, but then so is chopping of your girlfriend's head. The scene works in context with the rest of the movie. They probably couldn't have got away with the same scene in Army of Darkness, because the tone is a lot more lighthearted (for a zombie/deadite movie). -

Re: Ash is pretty damn groovy
Fri, May 7, 2004 - 10:24 AMWell... I always got the feeling "Evil Dead 1" was an ATTEMPT at a semi-serious "horror" type film with scary elements and the whole shakey-cam effect ...and Raimi having no budget but managing to pull off a decent creepy film.
However, in retrospect, it was kinda cheesy... which of course, lead us to "Evil Dead 2" which didn't take itself seriously at all... and retold a lot of the same stuff from the first film.
Granted - the story is mixed up & different by the time we got to the second film.
Then "Army of Darkness" just took the whole story from the first two, shredded it, and put it back together while in a drug induced haze to give you the brilliant silliness of the third film.
"This... is my BOOM-stick!!"
