in a recent conversation, an acquaintance made the statement that the Evil Dead movies were "guy-flicks" - that far more males than females liked them, and thats the audience it was aimed at. I don't see this at all.
the breakdown of the 'evil dead movies' & 'bruce campbell' tribes is a bit over 50-50, but not by too much. looks like both are around 60% male. (this might just reflect the general population of tribe though. the tech-lag has almost certainly evened up in the bay area, but in other parts of the world its possible there are still more males online than females)
Evil Dead movies = guy-flicks?
opinions?

Re: Evil Dead movies = guy-flicks?
Thu, March 11, 2004 - 7:58 PMfrom reading your post i'm not sure if i can be part of a comprehensive gender balance equation as i'm in the bay area, but the first valentine's day gift i asked for from my husband (while living in wisconsin) was an evil dead box set.
in my experience it's an almost 50/50 split. much more even than it would be for, say, steel magnolias or beaches.
i think it's safe enough to say though that the strongest reactions to bruce campbell the MAN that i've heard have come from counter culture starry eyed women. hail to the king indeed.
myself, i just like the silliness and GORE. -

Re: Evil Dead movies = guy-flicks?
Thu, March 11, 2004 - 10:08 PMfrom my experience, its the right TYPE of guy OR girl that's going to like Evil Dead. There are some girls that won't like the gore and can't see the sarcastic tone to it. Some can. I don't realy think it's a matter of gender. This is at least what I've observed. -

Re: Evil Dead movies = guy-flicks?
Sun, May 30, 2004 - 3:02 PMI was so excited to see this tribe and joined immediately. Then...I saw this topic and jumped on the opportunity to put my two cents in...
I must agree with Johathan...it's definitely the type of person vs. gender. I've loved all horror films since I was a child (female!) It's true that 'most' ladies don't like horror films in general but I know guys who don't like them for the same reasons as the ladies and vise versa in reference to 'liking' horror films.
Paid.

Re: much more even than it would be for, say, steel magnolias or beaches.
Sun, May 9, 2004 - 4:47 AMSomeone should write a "re-envisioning" of Evil Dead as a chick-flick.
Good god, what would that entail? -
-
Re: much more even than it would be for, say, steel magnolias or beaches.
Sun, May 9, 2004 - 2:36 PMLoads of puking, yelling at the screen - director - writer(s), foul words blurting out of the mouth, heads spinning, the dead rising...

Re: Evil Dead movies = guy-flicks?
Fri, March 12, 2004 - 5:49 AMIn my own personal experience guys are more drawn to this genre than gals are, but your 50/50 figure seems about right. I think it's just a matter of finding the ladies out there who are into this stuff. -

Re: Evil Dead movies = guy-flicks?
Fri, March 12, 2004 - 7:09 AMI've always loved those flicks, and last I checked, I was a chick.. my hubby however HATES them.. he knows of them, and will watch them with me, but he has to stand in the background making comments about the special effects and shit. lol... such a geek..
at least he knows what a boom stick is. -

Re: Evil Dead movies = guy-flicks?
Fri, March 12, 2004 - 9:15 AMI agree with Jon. In my group of friends the guys and girls that love Evil Dead are about equal but all the people who like it also like other horror and dark comedies.

Re: Evil Dead movies = guy-flicks?
Fri, March 12, 2004 - 9:20 PMI love the evil dead trilogy, but I think the reason you believe its more of a guy film, is because girls arent (in SOME cases) as open to watching a 'horror' type film, in which case, half the times dont give it a chance in the first place. But I still think Evil Dead is awesome, but sometimes I try to get my friends to watch it but they "dont feel like being scared"
losers...not wanting to watch evil dead.
We all rock :) -
-
Re: Evil Dead movies = guy-flicks?
Sun, March 14, 2004 - 7:01 AMYes, they ARE all loser and we DO all rock!
Off-topic question: what's your fave line from the series?
Mine is, "I got news for you; you ain't leading but two things right now -- Jack and shit...and Jack left town." -
-
This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.
Re: Evil Dead movies = guy-flicks?
Sun, March 14, 2004 - 7:25 AMI think my favorite line from the movie is ...
I'll swallow yur soul, I'll swallow yur soul!
And I use it regularly. hehe
But my second favorite line would be...
Alright you primitive screw-heads, listen up.
Because I work in retail. :P

Good lines to use with management -- methinks they would be accurate... would probably get me fired from more jobs, but no less accurate.
"Good... Bad... I'm the guy w/ the gun" -- is proably also one that could be a problem in the workplace.
I probably most use "Groovy!"... I like the lines and I know a lot of them, but I don't tend to use as so many of them. Lotsa great lines, as with other media ie. Red Dwarf... but I don't lean on 'em quite so much.
I do want to raid the dumpster outside the lawnmower & chainsaw repair shop, swing by a 2nd hand store, and make my own Ash ED2/OAD costume w/ finding some toy shotgun to complete the outfit... or at least an old stock to put in the back holster.
(...which isn't to critique the film/s in respects to that shotgun fireing shots like a slide-action loading shotgun) -
-
Re: Evil Dead movies = guy-flicks?
Mon, May 10, 2004 - 10:35 AMI get a lot of mileage from Ash's delivery of "After all, I'm a man, and you're a woman...." -

Re: Evil Dead movies = guy-flicks?
Wed, June 2, 2004 - 8:34 PMit boils down to this:
If you like horror... you like Evil Dead.
and if you don't like horror, you may STILL like Evil Dead. one of my ex girlfriends hates horror movies and i mean HATES them, scared way too easily and was hooked after I made her sit down and watch Evil Dead. In fact when I last saw her she made the point of pointing out that she had just bought Army of Darkness on DVD... i was so proud.

Re: Evil Dead movies = guy-flicks?
Sat, June 12, 2004 - 8:27 PMWhere was the line from, about women not liking the Three Stooges? The Evil Dead stuff is along those lines, I think. -
-
Re: Evil Dead movies = guy-flicks?
Sun, October 17, 2004 - 10:05 AMNow just wait a minute, bub, liking or not liking Evil Dead has no relation to like or not liking Stooges. Although upon analysis, Evil Dead has many stooge-like elements.
I've loved horror movies since I was a child. My great uncle introduced me to the Universal monsters. and my taste warped from there.
I make it a point to turn as many folks as I can on to Evil Dead. I've had VHS for years, now have one of those loaded DVD collectors editions -- but alas not the one shape like the Necrinomicon (sp -- no coffee yet -- don't kill me). My sister and I watched it around a month ago. I watched it with one of my best friends (another women) last year. Fun was had.
I've read Bruce Campbell's bio, am also a fan of SciFi, and have been a fan of Star Trek, ST:NG, ST:DSN, Early Star Wars trilogy, Earth, the Final Conflict, Farscape. I've read tons of horror -- Edgar Allen Poe was one of my favs in grammar school to Asminov and Phil Dick.
As for the Stooges -- too many family resemblances in a not so good way. I like the ones with Curly Joe, not so much Shemp, dislike Joe.

Re: Evil Dead movies = guy-flicks?
Sun, October 24, 2004 - 10:59 PMI run a horror group on Yahoo...and I would gather that it is 50-50 genderwise. I do know that they are all fans of "Evil Dead" though. Of course, name a horror movie lover, like myself, who doesn't like the series. It is classic. One of the best out there.

Re: Evil Dead movies = guy-flicks?
Tue, November 9, 2004 - 8:13 PMAll the _cool_ girls like them. -
-
Re: Evil Dead movies = guy-flicks?
Mon, June 13, 2005 - 5:14 PMUnfortunately, from most of the people I know, it's mostly the guys that enjoy it. However, I do agree that it's more the personality than the gender. I personally enjoy them simply because the classic lines and humor of it all.
For all of us girls that do like them, we're quite the catch guys!! -

Re: Evil Dead movies = guy-flicks?
